Since moving from San Diego, CA to Tucson, AZ I’ve done lots more cycling in the heat and sun. Sure, the San Diego mountains (and of course desert) can get warm in the summer, but the UV out in Arizona is often on a whole other level!
I’ve compiled some tips, tricks, and products that I’ve found helpful over the last 6 years or so. See my Guide below.
Passion for Cycling
I love cycling and have competed in 24 hour team relay mountain bike races and other endurance events for many years. My dad pushed me around at age 2 or 3 on my first bike and shortly thereafter I was pedaling on my own. It was pure freedom and so fun!
My engineering mind loves the efficiency of a bicycle, the relatively low cost, and how long a bike can last with proper (or even improper or non-existent) maintenance.
My current mountain bike is a 2003 Ellsworth Truth which has been updated a bit and cared for lovingly — it has been used at 24hr races for over 20 years now. My road bike is a Specialized Allez (replacement frame after a crack about 20 years ago).

Conclusion
I hope my guide helps you sidestep some of the initial mistakes I made when I started riding in Tucson. I am a cheap minimalist typically, but it is worth it to spend a few extra bucks to stay comfortable and healthy.
In summary: It’s hot. It is sunny. But you can do it. Be careful ;)
And if it gets too hot for you, maybe a used EV with ample AC could be an option for you!
